Terry Fox was a Canadian Hero. Born July 28th, 1958 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
After having part of his leg amputated 6 inch above his right knee, Terry dreams of running across Canada to bring cancer awareness and raise money for research.
His Marathon of Hope began in St. John's, Newfoundland on April 12th, 1980.
This 83 km of highway near Thunder Bay, where Terry had to stop running because of cancer returning, was renamed in his honour.
He had run 143 days and 5,373 km by September 1st, 1980.
Terry Fox dies in New Westminster, British Columbia, on June 28th, 1981, one month shy of his 23rd birthday.
"When I started this run, I said that if we all gave one dollar, we'd have $22 million for cancer research, and I don't care man, there's no reason that isn't possible. No reason!"
February 1st, 1981. Terry's hope of raising $1 from every Canadian (24.1 million people) is realized. The Terry Fox Marathon of Hope funds total $24.17 million.

This 9 foot bronze statue is located at the Terry Fox Lookout just outside of Thunder Bay near the spot where he had to stop running.

The first Terry Fox Run is held on September 13th, 1981, at more than 760 locations in Canada and around the world. 300,000 participants helped raise $3.5 million dollars.
As of today, every year, millions of people in over 25 countries participate in the Terry Fox Run.

Terry is Voted Canada's Greatest Hero in June 30th, 1999.

There are 14 schools and 15 roads in Canada named after Terry Fox including a 2,639 meter peak in the Rocky Mountains, BC, Mount Terry Fox.
"Even if I don't finish, we need others to continue. It's got to keep going without me." Terry Fox.
The Terry Fox Foundation....beginning with one young mans dream to help and inspire has raised over $650 million dollars.
