A Day at Cowichan Bay Harbour

Cowichan Bay Village is only about 5 km from our home.  It was home to our First Nations people for many thousands of years.  They harvested the salmon and shell fish readily available to them.

A far away view but this is a Double-crested Cormorant.  A resident bird, it can be as tall as 89 cm!  It will stay year round and has ample food right under it's hooked bill.

Before the railway, steamships brought goods and people from Victoria.

Once the shipping links bypassed this harbour, their economy started to decline.  But has been resurrected by more recreational interest. There is a Whale Watching Eco tours here which we may go on.  Waiting for a calm, sunny day.  Maybe tomorrow.
It is also an amazing area for salmon fishing.  At one time it was the Salmon Capital of the world.

Two of the four resident sea lions at the Fisherman's Wharf in the harbour.  We could hear them before we could see them.

Quite used to people going by.

Homemade Clam Chowder and calamari for lunch.  Can't get enough of either of those dishes.

Still many fishing boats out everyday for huge hauls of salmon.  Right now the salmon are running;  interesting enough, they are being caught before they get to their destination?  Not sure what to think of that?  Does it do something to the normal ecosystem by interrupting their journey?  Not sure, just wondering.

The other two kissing sea lions.  Get a room!

Incredible day of photos with the water and the changing weather.

The Great Blue Heron....

Planters still holding blossoming flowers.

At the Wharf, you can do laundry, use the showers and washrooms in the grey building on the pier.

Hanging out waiting for supper.

The island directly east of the harbour is Salt Spring Island.

What a fantastic day.
